One positive attribute of a close knit community is that it is “close”.  One negative attribute of a close knit community is that it is “close”.  This may not make sense to you if you are “inside” the community.  Your needs are met.  You have supportive, loving friends.  You have community.

If you’re not on the “inside” then you have no support.  You’re “outside”.  This may sound brutal and mean.  Those on the “inside” certainly don’t try to be exclusive.  They don’t see their actions as clickish.  But how do you break into a group when you are different from everyone else?

In some ways this is very similar to racial tension.  White people never think the issue is about race.  Black people always think it’s about race.   I love the Mennonite community because it is so supportive but if I was on the outside I would feel very lonely.

    person on outside
